Review
"A Mark Twain experience." "A narrative style reminiscent of Bill Bryson." "Unlike like any other travel log you've ever read before." -Readers"In this amazing, amusing book, Andrew Tarvin goes looking for laughs in all the right places, specifically every one of these now not so United States. But through his journey, he shares how we are still a country bound together by people who can take a joke as well as make one, including, of course, our comedic, peripatetic author who does so from sea to shining sea and also in New Jersey." -Bob Mankoff, Cartoon & Humor Editor at Esquire"The world beyond your hometown doorstep is often a hilarious and amazing place. This book will take you there. Read it, laugh out load, be inspired and get to know your hilarious guide, Andrew Tarvin (now known in some states as Drupac), as he takes you on a journey to unite America in copious amounts of comedy and laughter. You'll be glad you did." -David Nihill, Author of Do You Talk Funny"These side-splitting stories capture the life of a traveler perfectly. From the moments that go so right to the experiences that go so very wrong, The United States of Laughter is both ridiculous and insightful. And, if you're like me, it will have you laughing in your middle seat while on your flight from Prague to JFK." -Whitney Tressel, fellow nomad and National Geographic Photography Trip Leader

If you want to get to know someone, take a long road trip with them. If you choose this book you will get to know a very wise and witty fellow.Drew Tarvin narrates his visits to all fifty of the United States during a twelve month period. Each visit is accompanied by a story of at least one of the experiences he had in that state. Not only are the stories humorous, they often convey a homely life lesson learned. The wisdom, like the humor, comes in a subtle, indirect package. Each state visit constitutes a chapter, but that’s not all, between chapters are nice little comic jewels, like What to Call People from Each State (Mississipper, Missourito) or Ten Rules For Sleeping in Your Car. (Ten rules that all translate, “don’t)Tarvin is lavish with his use of footnotes, most of which add an additional chuckle. For example at the end of the “What to Call People from Each State,†you will find “NOTE: These are 100% factually correct†with a footnote which says, “These are not 100% factually correct.â€While Tarvin’s narrative style is reminiscent of Bill Bryson, I found this work to contain both more humor and more substance that A Walk in The Woods. Perhaps that is because Tarvin is both a professional corporate trainer, and a professional comedian.I can’t recommend this book for bedtime reading. You are likely to lose sleep.
Wow! What a fun and enjoyable read. The book is well structured, offering chapters that are quickly consumable with fun anecdotal lists sprinkled in. Andrew’s writing style is very approachable and makes for a quick and very enjoyable read. Everyone’s experiences are different, and getting a new perspective on places I’m familiar with was as fun as hearing stories from the places I’ve often dreamed of going. A couple of things I’m taking away from this book is a stronger desire to pursue my heart’s desire and a renewed confidence in the kindness of strangers. I breath of fresh air in these heavy times.
If you’re a fan of comedy, travel, or generally good storytelling, this book is for you. Drew has a way with words that is unmatched by any other mortal man. Reading his chapter about my homestate/city of Detroit, Michigan was a real treat. Drew is from Ohio and has the same rivalry based feelings about Michigan that most Ohio residents do. So to read the chapter, seemly written through clenched teeth, about how mad he was at Michigan for being so great made me laugh really hard.I love stories about people who take a leap because it’s something I always want to do but never do. Reading this book allowed me to see the world and live vicariously through the author. You get a sense of how great this country really is and that you can go anywhere in the world and find good people and good experiences. For me personally, it’s also helpful that Drew is a master of word play and there are a lot of hilarious puns in this book.
The author seems a nice fellow (I have not heard of him before, or met anyone who has) but this seems like a silly vanity project. The subject is not the 50 states he visits (very briefly in most cases), nor is it the experiences of a standup comedian (these too are quite marginal), but, well, the author himself and what he thought and felt as he careened from state to state. LIke publishing your diary, a rather sober and clean diary. I finished the book, but wouldn't recommend it.
Are you staring at an empty room and need something to put in it? This book would look great in it.Are you fleeing your home with just 2 carry-on bags and a sense of humor? Tuck this book under your arm before you leave. Are you laying on your deathbead and thinking about all the things you regret not doing? Quick! Read one last book... yes, this one.Pick up this book and my advice will make more sense. It's good to know this country is full of people with a sense of humor and at least one engineer with one, too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I started reading rather late in the evening and suddenly it was 3:00 a.m. I kept thinking I would read just one more chapter. The book certainly kept my attention. I loved the humorous style and the deeper thoughts it evoked. This read was entertaining, fun, and thiught-provoking.
This is a fun and surprisingly thought provoking book that shares the author's experiences traveling the country, visiting all 50 states. I went in thinking this would be broad strokes about each state, but instead, the author shares one specific anectdote from each state. This approach worked incredibly well. Each vignette was easily digestible and entertaining, but also made me think - about my only life and experiences, things i maybe take for granted, new ways of thinking about things, and, of course, it made me appreciate the variety of people and experiences in the U.S. If you are looking for an enjoyable read that will give you some new perspective, I highly recommend this book!
Drew Tarvin takes you with him on discoveries of a lifetime in fifty states. Accompanied and alone, Drew sees the world through keen eyes. He's a master and seeing the incongruous, entertaining and funny elements of life that lurk everywhere. I felt like I was riding along with him and the trip was amazing. Each chapter/state has its own unique adventures that are captured for your enjoyment. It's not like any other travel log you've ever read before. You'll be glad you experienced this one!
