The book itself is poorly constructed and the adhesive holding the pages to the binding cover melted and the pages started coming out within three days of warm weather.This was last updated in 2009 and really the book needs to be updated or stop selling it or sell it at a reduced price with a hazard warning included saying that much of the information is out of date. Mexico is changing rapidly and many of the roads have changed and certainly some destinations have changed. the camping spots just south of Playa Del carmen have either been developed or access gone, the access to Calakmul is different and there is no restaurant etc. Mike Church, you could start asking travelers to update it for you?
I like the explanations of the cities/regions and the descriptions of the parks, though some are a bit outdated, that's to be expected given the reality that it can only be updated so often. Our friends had this book while we traveled around Baja for 3 months together, so when we headed to the mainland I decided we needed a copy of our own! Works best as a supplement to sites like campendium.com and the iOverlander app.
This volume of the Travelers Guide to Camping in Mexico did a more than satisfactory job describing Mexico's variety of campgrounds and best routes for getting to them. The guide also does a more than adequate job providing travellers with basic travel protocols and helpful toned-down travel advisories to campers who wish to explore Mexico with an RV or Tent--although the latter, less so.The only reason I didn't give the guide 5 stars is becauseI am a loyal devotee of the Peoples Guide to Mexico which i started reading in tbe 1970's!
I heard Mike and Terri speak at a FMCA rally seminar and decided to buy some of their books. Of oourse Amazon has better prices than they do...????The books are very, very helpful if you are going to Mx in a RV/Motorhome. All of the RV parks know this book and if they get a positive review, they advertise it. That must put some pressure on the Churchs?The books are easy to use and fairly accurate but be sure to check their website for the latest info because things change and they do make mistakes. Big Bend NP is not in NM... The use of Pemex stations as landmarks is very clever and helpful since they are all numbered and the numbers are so prominent.
We just traveled through Belize and the Yucatan and we used this book to stay in a few campgrounds, which worked out great! There were a few places that no longer existed, and the website that the book refers to is no longer active either. My biggest complaint about the book though is the cover and binding. It is a very thin cover with a thin plastic layer and being a traveling book they get a lot of wear and tear. After just a few days the book started to curl up on both the front and back and now it is impossible to un-curl. I have had my other Mexico traveling book for a couple of years and it still looks great... and they were side by side on this trip.
Book, for me personally, was less than worthless. The three camp sites were either not there or didnt allow cars. Kinda important to know on a roadtrip. Others msy find value as I believe the authors did their best.
yes I know it’s old, yes I know it’s inaccurate because it’s old. But hey, we all gotta dream right? This book will help you plan your perfect mexican camping adventure, just be sure to supplement your knowledge and planning with readily available internet resources.
This book is mostly a big list of RV parks. This is probably very useful to those traveling by RV (or car campers who don't mind RV parks I suppose) but most tent campers won't find much value here. There is some good info on border crossing formalities but that info is also available on sites like drivetheamericas.com.I ordered the book based on the reviews here as well as the "or Tent" part of the title but I'm pretty disappointed.I won't be bringing it with me on my trip. Since I don't need electricity or dump stations I'm just going to find places to camp as I go.
