I enjoy mysteries, and also historical fiction. This book as a mystery, was disappointing. The story loved along very slowly, and I knew who the murderer was long before the amateur detective in the book did. Too much of the book was spent with the detective travelling around to different towns, and finding lodging in different places. Sometimes these activities were important to move the plot along, but didn't have to take up so many pages. As for the historical part, I like historical fiction of any kind to be well researched and accurate for the time and place. This book used, and the characters used, many words that didn't come into being for at least a century or two later. I felt like the author just threw in old-sounding words without accuracy from a time standpoint. And the characters spoke like people of today. I don't expect a completely true rendition of speech in the 1400's, but I don't expect the characters to talk like my friends and neighbors. Too out of place. Disappointing book, for me.
Haven't had time to read it yet but I really like this series by Kate Sedley so I'm sure this one will be just as good as all the others I have read.

I enjoy reading Historical fiction, especially set in the 12th to 15th century Britain. This was the first book I read by Kate Sedley and found it very interesting following Roger from town to town in search of clues to find a killer who committed murder 18 years ago. He succeeds as expected, but very enjoyable following along with him. I enjoyed the plot and the characters that were introduced to me. I will certainly look for other books by Kate Sedley.

When Roger went back to the burned house, and found the blood stain on the purple dress, how can that be? Isabella had changed into the green dress, so the blood stain should have been on the green dress.
book arrived in great shape.
Although I figured out about half way through the book who the killer was, it was interesting to read the facts as they unfolded. There was the identity of the three men who courted Isabelle and were spurned by her. Then there was the description of the woman herself who to her suitors was this innocent overprotected daughter who wanted to get away from her parents, and then there were those who really knew her as this spoiled, uncontrolled, angry, and disobedient daughter who cared for nobody. Roger of course is on the case again to find out who killed this woman even though it was twenty years ago and the trail is probably cold. He is doing it so that the owner of the land once a Magdalen nunnery can in all conscience reconsecrate it and continue to build his almhouses. Roger's journey's take him to parts far and away to find these former suitors and people who knew the daughter and family. He is put in harm's way and beaten up and we're introduced to a device called a tipping bed that literally tips people into a dark hole where they are smothered! Who knew such things existed? Roger does more than just stray from home in this episode and is tempted by a beautiful woman, the daughter of one of the suitors. How will he keep this from Adela his loving and very busy wife? His life at home is not without challenges to be sure with three lively children, a dog, and an otherwise chaotic household plus his duty to try and provide for his family.
