Review

"Perfect portrayal of small town life, charming characters, pizza, and hockey . . . Any Way You Slice it is a must-read for anyone looking for a sweet romance!" - Lindsay Currie, author of THE PECULIAR INCIDENT ON SHADY STREET"Hot boys on cold ice . . . and pizza to boot! The title is spot-on because any way you slice it, this book is sheer adorable." - Jen Malone author of WANDERLOST"Cute, sweet story about a high school junior, trying to navigate her way through cute boys, hockey sticks, and a pizza-obsessed family. I read it with a smile across my face the whole time, loving the small town vibe, the crappy hockey team, and the throw-downs between pizza parlors. It really did bring me back to the good ol' days of the brat pack movies . . . which I now am dying to watch once again!" - K.R. Conway, author of the UNDERTOW series"Penelope is an adorable, spunky girl who readers will root for whether she's on the ice, falling for Jake, working long hours for her family's pizza restaurant, or convincing her dad to let her choose her own path. Hockey, pizza, and romance? Yes, please!" - Kristy Acevedo, author of CONSIDER and CONTRIBUTE

I love underdog stories, particularly when sports are involved. There's nothing more tried-and-true than the story of a ragtag bunch of "losers" who band together to overcome great odds to beat the odds-on favorites who are, let's face it, jerks. I identify with these kinds of stories, and I love them every time, whether it be The Bad News Bears or Dodgeball.Penelope "Pen" Spaulding, known around her town as the "Pizza Princess" due to the fact that her family owns and runs the local pizza hot spot, discovers much to her amazement that she loves hockey. However, when her demanding father makes no secret of his disapproval of her taking up the sport, she goes behind his back to join the Rink Rats, the aforementioned ragtag team of "losers", while her father has to contend with getting their restaurant on a famous reality TV show. This story is absolutely adorable. Outside the hockey drama is a sweet little romance that brews between Pen and Jake, a childhood friend who has grown apart from her. There is true chemistry between them, which you love to see in books like this.I would recommend this story to anyone 12 and up who loves a good romance, underdog story, or just a good read.

A wonderful tale of first love and self discovery! This contemporary YA is written in first person POV of the 15 year old narrator, Penelope "Penn" Spaulding, the local "Pizza Princess" of her small NH town. Her family owns the best pizza restaurant on town, that's just been chosen for a reality show feature, adding stress to the family dynamic. If that weren't enough, Penn is also fighting with her dad about not wanting to be in the pizza business for the rest of her life, or go to culinary school for college. A run in with a local bad boy at the ice rink gives her a way to rebel against her strict father, but things spiral out of control quickly and Penn finds herself lying to everyone in her life.A quick and totally absorbing read, I finished this in a few hours and loved every minute. The pacing was perfect and the narrator's anxiety as she loses control of the situation was almost palpable. I loved Penn's fresh, honest voice and the dynamics between her family. Wish this was in paperback so I could give it to my niece to read, but for now it's ebook only.

A very sweet sport YA. If you love YA and you love Hockey (and pizza..LOL), then this is one for you. Kristine Carlson Asselin is a new to me author. I was surprised how much I loved this book. Penelope and Jake were amazing. I love the underdog aspect and who doesn't love pizza too. I rooted for them. A very cute read. I can't wait to see what else Kristine Carlson Asselin has in stored.

I loved the main character, Pen, because she was so real. She loved hockey and the rough and tumble of the sport, but at the same time she had a major league crush on a boy on the hockey team. Their romance was totally sweet.I thought the relationship between Pen and her parents was so well done and seemed authentic. She cared about them but that didn't stop her from sneaking around to get what she wanted. She worked hard in the family pizza restaurant but was not above going against her parents. I think that is a dilemma that a lot of teenagers might have. The addition of the reality show in the story was wonderful and gave it another layer.A great story for teenagers, especially girls who are into sports.

Any Way You Slice It kept me on the edge of my seat wishing I could eat a slice of pizza. It's about a girl named Pen who spends all of her time working in her father's pizza restaurant wishing she had something more. Then she reconnects with Jake. He convinces her to try hockey, not knowing it is the only sport her father, a former player, has banned her from trying. Playing hockey fills a whole in Pen's life, but also goes against her father's wishes. Add to that a bully and a television crew, and Pen has a lot more than pizza rising in her hands.

You can't help but root for the heroine in this charming book set in southern New Hampshire. Spot on portrayal of small town life complete with pizza, hockey, and memorable characters. I highly recommend!

A wonderful, engaging story about a high school girl who's balancing family, work, boys, hockey... all the while trying to finding her place in the world. I loved it, and my teenagers loved it, too!

A really sweet, fun, well-written book. A story about love for friends, family, and self... and the conflicts that arise when you are trying to be true to all of those. I am sure everyone will find something to relate to in this book! While on the surface it is about hockey, just substitute whatever makes you passionate - especially if that is something considered odd or dangerous or unadvisable to others. Good summer read!
