Don't let the horrendous, I-Published-This-Myself-Stock-Photo-Cover design fool you. This is the FIRST book you should get if you are an adult with ADHD. I haven't finished it (surprise!) but I've been listening to his podcast from day one, and that shares content with the book. Not to knock some other fine books on ADHD, but if you've been diagnosed, you are probably looking for solutions to your problems. The problem is many books on adult ADHD are stuffed with anecdotes about people with ADHD. This is a book for someone who doesn't need the convincing and handholding.Tuckman gives effective suggestions on how to deal with daily issues. The book is written in an ADD-friendly manner, so you can literally open it at any page and find something useful. The pages even have perforated corners so you can rip them to mark what you've already read. But I think you might be reading it again and again, anyway. To Dr. Tuckman: for the next edition, put a little money into hiring a designer! If I had not been familiar with the podcast, I may have never picked up this book. UGLY cover. You'd think it was an Economics Theory textbook for a community college.
I’m puzzled by my reaction to this book. Ari Tuckman is a renowned, compassionate ADHD clinician. I intend to take some of his on-line courses, offered through my professional societies. All of his advice in this book is excellent, built upon many years of experience. It’s also written in an extremely ADHD-appropriate structure – short articles, lots of formatting to highlight key points. And I’m just not sure I see how my clients with ADHD are going to translate it to action. Not because they shouldn’t. Not because they can’t: they are entirely capable. But because they won’t?As I read this book, I found myself saying repeatedly that this is a teamwork book. That this might be the perfect book for both a person with ADHD and a partner to read, so the partner could informally coach the ADHD-abled person as s/he tries the focus and organizing techniques in this book. Without someone holding the ADHD-able person accountable, I’m just not sure what’s going to happen. My suggestion for the person with ADHD – read this book exactly as intended: skipping around; reading what applies to you the most urgently first, then moving to next-most-urgent, etc.; read it out loud, in a very quiet place, in the noisiest coffee shop you can find; mark it with a highlighter, stickies, whatever you need. Apply it as diligently as you can. And ask someone who cares about you to read it as well. Don’t be afraid: things can get better. My suggestion for the person who cares about a person with ADHD. Read it cover-to-cover. Use it as a solid foundation to ask questions, for your doctors, therapists, the person you care about. Use it as a starting point to support that colleague, friend, family member. Don’t be afraid: things can get better.Lauren Williams, Certified Professional Organizer(R), Owner, Casual Uncluttering LLC, Woodinville, WA USA
I just can't say enough good about this book. It has a wealth of fantastic information for the individual with adult ADHD. At the start of each chapter, there's a summary of the different sections of that chapter. How much more ADHD friendly can you get? It's very, very clearly written.Dr. Tuckman's afterward brought tears to my eyes. He talks about all the pain that adult ADHD sufferers (especially those born before the mid 70s) often experience, and how they're often judged -- labeled as lazy, unmotivated, etc. His compassion shows throughout the entire book. And his counsel and information are solid, not speculative. This would also be a fantastic gift to give to family members, friends, etc. of someone with adult ADHD. It's highly educational and very clear. Anybody reading it will learn so much.Thank you, Dr. Tuckman, for this great gift!
This one is chock-full of practical, useful tools and techniques that help adults (and even teenagers) with ADHD function better in daily life. The other big books out there for adult ADHD sufferers, like Driven to Distraction and Delivered from Distraction, are nice overviews for the newly diagnosed, but they just can't compare to More Attention, Less Deficit in terms of useful answers to solve the problems you're facing. What sets this book apart is that you can simply pick it up any time a problem is facing you, look that problem up in the table of contents, and turn directly to a page with something that will help you right now.I'll say that again because it's just so critically important to busy people with short attention spans: You can pick this book up, turn straight to the thing you need help with, and get that help in less than 10 minutes. That's what we've been missing. This is the first book of its kind. It's the on-the-fly troubleshooting guide we've been waiting for, the book with over 350 pages of stuff you can start doing today to rapidly get better at life. This is the only book I recommend, whether it's to parents of ADHD children, or to adult sufferers both newly and long-since diagnosed. It's just more useful than the other ones out there.
This is by far the best book I have read so far on Adult ADHD. It is written intelligently, is organized in a useful way and is quite comprehensive. I have been consuming ADHD books since last fall when I was diagnosed (oh, so THAT'S what was wrong), and too often I find the material is far too simplistic, badly organized or subjective. This book is an excellent resource, it's generally fact-based and is cleverly organized for the "skimmer" to grab the information they need immediately.
