Review

"This book presents a number of subtle physical (and accompanying philosophical) ideas in a non-technical manner for the non-professional reader. The exposition is often a model of clarity..., presenting very difficult physical and conceptual ideas in a remarkably lucid way."--MathematicalReviews"This book is gold.... Barbour leaves his mark on every topic he considers, including the arrow of time and the origins of the Big Bang. One is left with a remarkable conception of reality and a sense of a personal quest.... Above all we get a sense of what economy of thought can truly be, ofhow shocking and sparse the concepts of physics may turn out to be.... Whether or not Barbour is right in his vision, as pedagogy and as analysis his book is a masterpiece."--The New York Times Book Review"An unusual alternate to the standard way of viewing the four-dimensional universe (three spatial dimensions and time), beginning with how our perception of time is formed."--Publishers Weekly"Barbour's theories may lead to the solution of one of the great paradoxes of modern science: the chasm between classical and quantum physics."--Science News"The End of Time [is] British physicist Julian Barbour's treatise on the idea that time doesn't even exist. It's nothing more, he says, than an illusion, a sort of cosmic parlor trick.... The orderly flow of events may really be as much an illusion as the flickering frames of a movie. Andaccording to independent physicist Barbour's new book, even the apparent sequence of the flickers is illusory."--Time"In this provocative volume, Barbour presents the basic evidence for the nonexistence of time, explaining what a timeless universe is like and showing how the world will nonetheless be experienced as intensely temporal."--The Astronomical Society of the Pacific"Most of the work is concerned with the struggle to resolve the disparities among classical physics, quantum mechanics, and general relativity. Barbour argues that the omission of time from the foundations of physics will enable scientists to achieve a unified theory of physics.... A book thatdeserves serious study and consideration."--Jack W. Weigel, Library Journal"I cannot think of another book that so successfully forces the reader to reconsider his or her most intimate assumptions about reality. But there is much more here than a radical scientific vision. In order to properly explain his destruction of time, Barbour also offers one of the clearestoverview explanations of twentieth century physics available. Whether he is right or wrong, Barbour is on a great intellectual journey, and he is articulate enough to allow us to observe him in flight. Of course, if Barbour is right, the previous sentence would have to be rewritten. Read the bookand learn how."--Jaron Lanier"Julian Barbour is so knowledgable about contemporary physics--especially general relativity theory, quantum theory, and quantum gravity--so learned in the history of physics, so gifted at analytical philosophy and so elegant and amusing in his presentation that anyone who seriously confrontshis argumentation and nevertheless remains a temporalist (as I do) will inevitably emerge a stronger, subtler, and wiser advocate of that philosophy."--Abner Shimnoy, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Physics, Boston University"Julian Barbour's new theory of time is the most interesting and provocative new idea about time to be proposed in many years. If true it will change the way we see reality. Experts in the field of quantum gravity have for years looked up to Julian Barbour for his wisdom and imagination, as heis one of the few people who is truly both a scientist and a philosopher. Written with rare clarity and force, this book makes his thinking accessible to all interested readers."--Lee Smolin

Reader beware: This is hardcore theoretical physics, and as deep a thinker I believe myself to be, I clearly lack the education to keep up with a lot of the language and math Barbour uses to make his case. As near as I can figure it, Barbour theorizes that we exist in a 100% STATIC reality where nothing is actually ever in motion. I happen to agree with this theory, and believe that our experience is an ILLUSION of motion created by the rapid focusing and refocusing of individuated Consciousness into one holographic "still frame" after another. In a truly infinite reality, this is completely possible and even PLAUSIBLE. However, for me it's far easier to imagine such a reality using allegory than the physics and math employed within this book by Barbour, a truly brilliant human being. One of few books in my library I was unable to finish, but just having it there makes me feel smarter, lol!

I read this book many years ago, and still it plagues me. Read at your own risk! The ideas are sound and the presentation lucid. And yet, the ideas are so counter to human experience that they take some time to absorb. The author himself says it took him a couple decades just to write the first chapter. Well, I've been ruminating over that first chapter for almost a decade.Although difficult and often counter-intuitive, much of what Barbour proposes is validated by experiment. In the grand tradition of *real* science, this is a book of exploration. Enjoy!

I've read many of the books on this topic. None has been as helpful in providing real insight regarding this totally un-intuitive concept. For example, at one point you started reading this review but now you're reading these particular words. How could that have happened if "time" didn't pass? One simplistic way to describe how Barbour explains it is that what we perceive as "time" is actually change. We get confused because we apply metrics to the perceptions.Obviously that's not totally satisfying to our desire to really understand what's going on, but it does 'move the ball' a little toward that goal. And, the book provides a much richer view of the whole concept, including the history of theories and thoughts about time as well as how matter and motion impact what we experience. This is well worth the read for anyone obsessed with trying to comprehend reality.

In my opinion, this is one of the most misunderstood books on Amazon. A lot of the reviewer expect the same pseudo-scientific, philosophizing, feel good, new age mumbo jumbo so prevalent and highly rated. They are rightly disappointed, since this was not the aim of this book.In fact what Barbour tries here is to make a case for finding the basic principles underlying one of the most successful modern physical theory: the general relativity. In fact he manages to establish this connection making "The End of Time" one the most meaty popular science books of all times. It is true that Barbour does don't convincingly explains the psychological illusion of time in a timeless universe, but it would be foolish to expect that, since the problem of qualia is still an elusive, poorly understood interdisciplinary concept. Still, this shortcoming does not make the book any less intriguing. The only irritating aspect of the book was the narcissistic attitude of the author. He has not decided whether he writes a popular science book or an biography of himself (I don't use the word autobiography, as he praises himself as if he would be a different person.)Still I give this book 5 stars, since it is extremely well written and Barbour makes an excellent job to make a very hard technical topic intuitive and accessible. The only reason he seems to fail is simply the very modest average intellectual capability of the general audience. For example, a lot of the layman reviewers attack the notion of timelessness, which is in fact does not originate from Barbour but is a most mainstream view among all self-respecting physicists. The notion that the arrow of time is a consequence of the entropy increase in the state-space is neither new, nor very controversial. What's a new however is that the topology of Einstein's space-time manifold is naturally glued together from disjoint three dimensional moments based on a similarity metric alone is not widely recognized.I think this is a very fundamental and interesting insight, which deserves a good deal of thoughts. This conclusion of his, however is not a subjective opinion, but a well defined mathematical statement proven by Barbour and his coauthors.
